Maria Avila, Ranking Manager of EAE Business School participated yesterday in the event Business School Insights: MBA and Business Masters organized by QS and hosted by Imperial Business School. Maria Avila, along with other panellists, including Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, Leila Guerra, vice dean of Education at Imperial, and Elaine Aherne, head of Student Recruitment and Admissions at UCD Michael Smurfit, spoke about the topic of women in leadership - how can business schools be more inclusive.
During the panel discussion, the participants agreed that it is absolutely crucial for business schools to bring more visibility and normalisation to women in the MBA programme and provide the female students with the knowledge and the opportunities to rise to the leading roles in their fields, as they will be the new generation of directors and leaders. The panel also brainstormed on ways in which the schools can overcome the barriers of low % of women among students and faculty, implementing a truly inclusive culture for schools on all levels.
Furthermore, the speakers also shared their opinions into the metrics which the business schools use to examine their programmes, as what success means to the Gen-Zs is fundamentally different to the older generations. Maria Avila expressed that the institutions should shift away from examining how successful the candidates are right after the completion of their programmes, but instead of investing in discovering the lifelong impact which the courses have on them.
At the end of the discussion, Maria Avila expressed that: “there is still a way to go, but change is coming. Covid disrupted the world but also helped us make some positive changes. It has offered institutions the opportunity to reimagine their culture and the way society sees women.”
